The UV 5.5 ATEX H2 back pressure regulator is a spring-loaded proportional control valve designed for universal application in small to medium flow rates. It is specifically engineered for use in explosive atmospheres (ATEX) and features a self-acting mechanism that controls pressure upstream of the valve without requiring external pneumatic or electrical control elements. The valve body and medium-wetted internal parts are made of stainless steel 316L, providing excellent corrosion resistance. The valve cone is fitted with a soft seal, and the inlet pressure is balanced across the valve seat by the force of the valve spring (set pressure). If the inlet pressure rises above the set pressure, the valve opens, and if it decreases, the valve closes. The valve is compliant with ATEX directive 2014/34/EU and DIN EN ISO 80079-36, and includes features such as an adjusting screw lock, grounding lug, and partial use of low-spark material. It is suitable for liquids, gases, and steam, with a temperature range of -40°C to 200°C and a maximum operating pressure of 20 bar at reference temperature. The valve is available in various configurations and materials, with options for different seal materials and special connections.

Use Cases

  • Pressure control upstream of pipelines in ATEX hazardous areas.
  • Liquid, gas, and steam systems requiring controlled relief at small to medium flow rates.

Capabilities

  • Controls upstream pressure in the range 0.5–20 bar, depending on spring setting.
  • Operates fully self-acting, without external pneumatic or electrical energy.
  • Handles liquids, gases, and steam within defined pressure and temperature limits.
  • Provides configurable flow capacity via Kvs values from 1.3 to 7.5 m³/h.
  • Supports multiple connection standards (threaded, DIN/ANSI flanged, special connections).
Mankenberg GmbH Mankenberg GmbH, founded in 1885 by Gustav Mankenberg and headquartered in Lubeck, Germany with 185 employees (end of 2024), is a manufacturer of self-acting control valves for pressure and level control, focusing on standard products alongside customized solutions for demanding industrial applications, and has developed products specifically supporting hydrogen production via PEM electrolysis. The company's ATEX-compliant hydrogen pressure regulators, including the DM 555 (spring-loaded proportional control valve for small/medium flow rates, stainless steel 316L body and wetted parts), DM 652 (diaphragm-controlled, spring-loaded, and balanced proportional control valve for medium/large flow rates), and UV 5.1/UV 3.5 back pressure regulators/pressure sustaining valves, are manufactured entirely of high-quality stainless steel via deep-drawing processes for lightweight, compact, corrosion-resistant construction meeting DIN EN 60534-4 and ANSI FCI 70-2 leakage classification standards. Mankenberg's ATEX marking (Ex II 2G Ex h IIB+H2 85 degrees C) certifies suitability for use in explosive hydrogen atmospheres, with the company's self-acting valve technology featuring compact design, pressure resistance, and high corrosion resistance particularly suited to PEM electrolysis (protone exchange membrane electrolysis, considered to have the greatest potential among current hydrogen production processes) applications requiring precise pressure control without pneumatic or electrical control elements. As green hydrogen breaks down water into hydrogen and oxygen via electrolysis using electrical voltage and becomes increasingly important for electricity, heat, and energy storage as a flexible energy carrier, Mankenberg continues supplying specifically-developed self-acting control valve products supporting the growing hydrogen production infrastructure market.
