H₂ Conditioning for Internal Combustion Engines

  • BRIGHT’s H₂ temperature conditioning system is designed for use on safety-certified test benches and conditions gaseous hydrogen for reproducible tests under steady-state and dynamic load profiles, similar to WHTC.
  • The challenge is that, in modern test bench applications, high dynamics in fuel flow, similar to WHTC, must be controlled while maintaining stable temperature control and must do so under demanding conditions such as continuous operation and high operating pressures of up to 70 bar. In addition, integration with limited installation space is often required without compromising control quality during load changes.
  • Our solution provides a thermally inert system with sufficient reserve for mass flow changes and temperature control close to the test specimen to ensure stable conditions, even with dynamic profiles.
  • Depending on the test requirements, a BASIC version for +25 °C ±2 K and an ADVANCED version for −40 °C to +85 °C ±2 K are available, each featuring heat exchanger integration close to the test specimen and connection to the test bench automation via Siemens PLC/Profinet.
  • The solution is designed for real-world environmental conditions and supports compact integration, e.g., in the intermediate floor, while maintaining stable temperature control even during changes in mass flow.

Key features

  • Two system variants: BASIC +25 °C ±2 K and ADVANCED −40 °C to +85 °C ±2 K
  • Operating pressure: up to 70 bar
  • Fuel throughput: 0.5 to 35 kg/h
  • Thermal concept: thermally inert system with reserve for mass flow changes
  • Temperature control close to the test specimen: heat exchanger can be mounted as close as possible to the test specimen
  • Compact integration: optional installation of the BASIC conditioning unit in the intermediate floor, height approx. 80 cm
  • BASIC technology (+25 °C): water intermediate circuit with heat exchanger, flow heater, and mixing control valve; recooling via customer-supplied chilled water network
  • ADVANCED technology: −40 °C to +85 °C dynamic conditioning system via water/glycol circuit, 40/60, with temperature control unit, including heating/cooling capacity
  • Automation & Operation: Siemens compact PLC, TIA Portal, Profinet communication to higher-level automation/safety PLC; operating functions including setpoint/parameter adjustment, operating mode selection, and emergency stop
  • Continuous operation & dynamics: designed for continuous operation; dynamic fuel flow similar to WHTC

Application areas
