Iridium-Based Water Electrolysis Catalysts

  • This Iridium Oxide catalyst is developed for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) anodes in proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE). With an iridium loading of 78 ± 0.5 wt.%, a specific surface area of 110 ± 20 m²/gIr and uniformly dispersed 3-4 nm nanoparticles, the catalyst is designed to maximize active-site exposure while maintaining stable electrode-layer formation.
  • The catalyst delivers mass activity >100 A/gIr at 1.445 V and an overpotential <260 mV at 10 mA/cm², demonstrating strong intrinsic OER kinetics. Its high batch consistency and favorable slurry dispersibility make it suitable for catalyst ink preparation, MEA coating validation and scale-up development in PEM electrolyzer systems.

Key features

  • High IrOx Active-Site Utilization: Uniformly dispersed 3-4 nm IrOx nanoparticles and high surface area promote efficient OER catalytic sites.
  • Excellent OER Activity: Mass activity exceeds 100 A/gIr at 1.445 V, supporting high-performance PEMWE anode operation.
  • Low Overpotential: Overpotential is <260 mV at 10 mA/cm², indicating favorable oxygen-evolution kinetics.
  • Stable and Scalable Production: Single-batch capacity ≥100 g with high batch consistency supports reliable pilot-scale and commercial evaluation.
